Temp employee of 4-months is asked to interview for the job he's already doing, from his desk where he's already doing the job: ‘I feel like my brain has short-circuited…’

The corporate world is always trying to be more efficient, and yet, more often than not, it is full of arduous and repetitive steps that make the process longer. Just take this temp worker's transition from part-time to full-time. He was hired with the full intention of eventually becoming a full-time worker. They simply had to get a few things in order and then he would be transitioned. After four months the time had finally come! But instead of just filling out some paperwork, he had to interview. Kind of strange, but whatever, corporate world means having to do everything by the book, so sure, why not? However, the interview wasn't as "by the book" as this employee thought it was going to be. Instead, he was interviewed directly from his own desk, where he was working, doing the job he was being interviewed for… 

 

Now, if you have ever worked in corporate America, then you know that you always have to interview for a new position, even if it's one within the company you have worked in  for years. However, you also know that corporate America always likes to be professional, or at least appear professional. So this whole interview was extremely bizarre… Still, we hope he got the position!

  • ryanlc If you're temporary/a contractor, this is rather typical I'm afraid. Many larger companies have hiring processes that they need to follow to find any position. And a permanent position is technically different from a contractor position. My company does this very frequently for such conversions. The basic idea is that the follow the process so that way an auditor can't claim undue favoritism/discrimination down the road. So they often have to open up the job posting for a period of time.

  • Killing-time-13 For "defensible" hiring, yes they will make you go through the interview process. Even if you are already "doing" the job. If your company accepts grants, especially from the federal government, then there are a whole other host of other hiring rules.

  • jparkhill yeah my workplace had some people from a temp agency for a couple of months to help us out. In that time they were there the job they were doing was posted 3 or 4 times- the people doing the job- could not pass the test and interview. Sometimes it is theatre- sometimes it is legit.   • notreallylucy This is actually pretty common when dealing with contract jobs or temporary appointments. I work for the state. I was put in charge of doing the work for a newly created job. I was doing the job temporarily but I atl had to apply and interview for it. It was during Covid so I had to do a phone interview with my supervisor who was in another building about quarter Mike away. Theast question was something like "How do you know you'll be able to perform the required duties of the job?

  • Original_Flounder_18 That's how I was hired. I was 3 months in as a temp, mgr set up a new. We shit the shit and she asked if I wanted to work for the company and I said yes. It took a literal 6 more month for me to be on payroll, but I have been here since.

  • howcanibehuman Super corporate procedural process for purpose of creating a paper trail of records demonstrating compliance with a fair hiring process. It can feel dumb but it's honestly a benefit to showcase your realtime skills and build rapport with a manager.
